Travel from Calgary to Banff National Park by vehicle is as pleasant and scenic as it gets. You don’t have to worry about being in a traffic jam – just watch for our animals!
To get there, you can take either Highway 1 or Highway 1A.

Highway 1 is a new, subdivided high way. Speed limit is 110 km/hr. It becomes 90km/hr since you pass the gate of the park.
Calgary to Banff Map – Highway 1 Route
The Banff map above shows the direction From Calgary Airport to Banff National Park on Highway 1 (HWY-1):
- Exit the airport parking and car rental lot and follow signs for Barlow Trail and City Centre.
- Follow Barlow Trail South to 16th Avenue.
- Turn right (west) on 16th Avenue.
- 16th Avenue becomes Trans-Canada HWY-1, which takes you directly to Banff.
- After approximately 120 km (72 miles), stop at the National Park Gates to obtain your Park Pass.
- Destination: Town of Banff, 15 minutes past the park gate, exit Highway 1 at the Banff/Lake Minnewanka exit, Turn left at the exit ramp stop sign onto Banff Ave.
- Destination: Lake Louise Village, around 60 km past the park gate, you follow the sign Lake Louise, turn left at Fairview Road Continue on Fairview Road about 2.1 km, turn left at HWY-1A, Continue on HWY-1A around 1.7 km, you will reach Lake Louise Village.
One the way from Calgary to Banff on HWY-1
Highway 1A is Older. Not subdivided. Speed limit is 80 km/hr. It becomes 6o km/hr after enter the Park Gate. Its scenery is total different from Highway 1.
Calgary to Banff Map – Highway 1A Route
The Banff map above shows the direction From Calgary Airport to Banff on Highway 1A (HWY-1A):
- Exit the airport parking and car rental lot and follow signs for Barlow Trail
- Follow Barlow Trail North to Country Hills Blvd
- Turn left (west) on Country Hills Blvd
- Continue west on Country Hills Blvd to Stoney Trail NW
- Turn left (South) on Stoney Trail and following Stoney Trail South to Crowchild Trail NW
- Turn right (west) on Crowchild Trail NW W
- Crowchild Trail becomes Highway 1A
- Continue west on HWY-1A
- At the roundabout, take the 2nd exit onto Bow Trail/HWY 1A, Continue to follow HWY-1A
- Turn left at Harvie Heights Rd
- Take the TC-1 ramp
- Merge onto HWY-1 W
- Continue west on HWY-1 and stop at the National Park Gates to obtain your Park Pass
- Destination: Town of Banff – 15 minutes past the park gate, exit HWY-1 at the Banff/Lake Minnewanka exit, Turn left at the exit ramp stop sign onto Banff Ave
- Destination: Lake Louise Village – after passing the park gate, you continue on HWY-1 West, take AB-1A exit toward Bow Valley Parkway. Turn right at AB-1A/HWY-1A/Twp Rd 255B. Continue to follow AB-1A/HWY-1A about 49 km. Turn left at Twp Rd 283A, Continue on HWY-1A around 2.4 km, you will reach Lake Louise Village

Driving from Calgary airport to the town of Banff, It take less one and half on Highway1, more than 2 hours on Highway 1A.
Which Road Should You Take?
It takes longer on Highway 1A due to speed limit and windy road, but it is more scenic than Highway 1.
Wildlife was spotted near Banff on HWY 1A
I highly recommend that you better take Highway 1A from Calgary to Banff and start the sightseeing and enjoy the excellent scenery on the way to Banff, you also have better chance to see wildlife on Highway 1A.
At the end of your trip, you are probably tired and want rush to airport. So take the faster way Highway 1 back to Calgary airport.
Drop off the rental car and fly back to your home.
