One of my favorite Banff Lodges is Banff Buffalo Mountain Lodge. Buffalo Mountain Lodge is located on the gentle slopes of Tunnel Mountain (used to be called Buffalo Mountain), which native people called “sleeping buffalo”.
It is just few minutes driving and 15-20 minutes walking (walk along a busy road) to the center of Banff townsite. If you do not drive, you can take the town bus stopping across the street from the Banff lodge to downtown.
First time we stayed in this lodge was when we had our wedding in the middle of May at Banff.
We planned our ceremony at the top of Tunnel Mountain – “HooDoos” spot overlooking the fantastic view of Mount Rundle, Bow Valley, River and Rocky Castle – Banff Springs Hotel.
For the convenience, we would like to stay around the area. That is why we choose Buffalo Mountain Lodge, my parents-in-law and brother-in-law stayed the cross street – a two bedroom loft suite the Tunnel Mountain Resorts.
We had a great room (premier room) facing to the woods, rather than facing to Tunnel Mountain Drive – main road to downtown.
What impressed us are:
We decided to come back during one of our skiing trips.
After returning from a whole day of skiing, we jumped and soaked in the hot tub (we had so much fun to roll out on the snow and roll back into the pool), then had a nice warm dinner at cozy restaurant Cilantro.
Sit by the fireplace, watch the snow outside and enjoy the romantic and cozy evenings.

There are two restaurants (Sleeping Buffalo and Cilantro) in this Banff lodge.
Sleeping Buffalo Restaurant (Canadian cuisine) is the main restaurant offering food all day. We had a dinner there once. Very good but is not cheap.
Our favorite one is Italian restaurant Cilantro (only open at dinner time) offering very good wood fired pizza and delicious pasta. The prices were much cheaper. We also like the seat settings – all tables are set around the open kitchen and a wood-fired oven. It made us felt so comfortable and cozy after a day of skiing or hiking.
If you would like to stay in Banff Buffalo Mountain Lodge – one of upscale Banff lodges, try to get a room on the second floor because we found there is not much insulation between floors.
Guest rooms from number 900 to 1200 are most private and quite because they are the farthest from Tunnel Mountain Drive. These rooms look out onto peaceful forest. Our favorite rooms are from number 1100 to 1200 because they have great views of Mountain Rundle and the Bow Valley.
If you want to be away from the busy town of Banff but still close enough to walk to the town, this lodge is an excellent choice.
